ninja's story

Ninja is one of our favorite stories, as he ended up with one of our amazing board members, Liane! Ninja had a long and tough road, but he's an amazing little man now.

Ninja was injured after an altercation with the family dog. His jaw was out
of alignment, possibly broken. He couldn’t eat or drink properly. The Weirdo Leadership offered to foster and transport as we looked for some sort of affordable way to help him. Three vets and two surgeries later, we were at our maximum budget and without results. Ninja’s jaw just wouldn’t stay aligned. The Weirdo leaders had to have a hard talk with the owner about options. She just wanted him to have a chance, even if it meant in a new home.

“Ninja was such a sweet boy throughout all of this. Never a growl, grumble or scratch despite his pain. Even his doctors saw how special he is. That’s when we went all in. There was a vet who was willing to take a look and try something she had never done. She was going to bond his teeth together to keep his jaw in place. However, true to form, Ninja managed to break apart the bond. I was devastated. Options and money had run out. Time was also a concern. After a lengthy talk, the vet was willing to try one last thing - a ‘button procedure.’ This is where they surgically place buttons to tie the upper and lower jaw into alignment in the hope that it would heal into a usable joint. Even then, Ninja lived up to his name and managed to slip his buttons, twice, and even nearly dislodged his feeding tube, requiring more surgical intervention. Fingers crossed it would work because we weren’t even sure. There were no guarantees. Ninja received around the clock care and by some small miracle, he healed. He went through some rehabilitation to learn to eat and to gain back the weight he lost.” - Liane Townsend
